Artist Statement
How can one capture a space? Collect a feeling? Crystallize nostalgia? I create my art in order to explore how the image of a place can express sense memories and convey personal nostalgia universally. Whether I am painting outside on site, or referencing materials that I have collected and brought back to my studio, whether I am painting a breathtaking vista or a local city building, I am constantly striving to capture the essence of 'place' within every painting.
When I create, my mind opens fully to what I am observing, and when the mind opens, it allows other experiences such as sound, taste, sensation, and memory to intermingle and entwine with the visual. It is this experience that I am interested in exploring with my paintings, and it is this experience that
I try to impart to viewers through lighting, atmosphere, and gestural energy. My paintings are inspired by living and growing, and my interest lies in these concepts as well.
I am experiencing, learning, and finding unique ways the concept of 'place' speaks to me.
